HUNTLY BESS

Breaking Ground, Making History

  • Location: Huntly
  • Year: 2022

Technical overview

Construction and installation of stormwater systems, access and roading to the site, a total of 25 concrete foundation pads, sumps and ducting for all electrics to the site.

Connell Contractors is proud to play an integral part of this groundbreaking BESS project in partnership with Infratec. Our team of experienced civil engineers continue to work tirelessly to ensure the successful construction of the battery site in Huntly.

This will be New Zealand’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) and the largest battery storage facility in the country. It will mean a huge reduction in emissions in the Waikato, supporting New Zealand’s Net Zero goal of becoming 100% renewable before 2030.

The construction of the 35 MW BESS started in Jul 2022 and will store enough energy to meet the daily demands of 2000 homes and be capable of providing fast reserves support for the North Island grid.

Our expertise in the design and construction of civil works in the power sector played a crucial role in securing this project. We were responsible for the construction and installation of stormwater systems, access and roading to the site, a total of 25 concrete foundation pads, sumps and ducting for all electrics to the site.

Our team worked closely with Infratec to ensure that the site was delivered on time and within budget. We are delighted with the outcome of the project, and it has been a pleasure working alongside Infratec on this exciting venture.
